The report on the theme "Comprehensive analysis of the Ukrainian market of pellets from biomass (determination of growth points)" prepared by the experts of the Scientific and technical centre "Biomass" within the framework of the objectives of the UNDP "Development and commercialization of bioenergy technologies in the municipal sector in Ukraine".
Recently there have been significant changes in the energy sector of Ukraine, in particular in the field of renewable energy, as well as individual and district heating. Becoming increasingly important issues of energy security, reducing dependence on imported energy, especially natural gas. The government is a gradual alignment of natural gas prices and reduce its subsidy for certain categories of consumers, which increases their interest in using other types of fuel.
A number of documents that enhance the legislative field for the introduction of renewable energy sources, in particular the use of biomass, as well as stimulating natural gas substitution in heat supply with other energy sources.
Among the most important documents should be made such as:
• National action plan for renewable energy for the period up to 2020;
• Resolution of CMU "On stimulating natural gas substitution in the production of thermal energy for institutions and organizations financed from the state and local budgets" and "On stimulating natural gas substitution in heat supply";
• CMU "Plan short and medium - term measures to reduce the consumption of natural gas for the period until 2017".
Implemented schemes of state support of the population for the acquisition of heating equipment that uses natural gas as fuel. As a result, significantly increased the popularity of the project uses biomass energy and substitution of fossil fuels, primarily natural gas. Dynamic development has been the use of wood in the form of firewood, wood waste, wood chips and pellets, combustion of sunflower husk. Gradually increasing interest in energy use of straw and grain waste and residues from corn. Some domestic companies have already established production of biomass boilers for both domestic and industrial consumers.
Of particular importance in this sense are becoming the projects of substitution of fossil fuels in DH, because such projects are the most economical and sometimes the only possible option use biomass fuel for heating of multistory house. Straw and other residues from agricultural production, greatly exceed the energy resource of waste wood. And despite its large amount of their energy usage by volumes, unfortunately, lags behind the use of wood.
At present, only one district heating company introduced a boiler for combustion of straw in district heating. For district heating there are also several projects on the use of straw pellets.
The objective of this study is to determine the main reasons that hinder the wide application of pellets from straw and other crop residues (hereinafter agrability) in the heating sector. Obviously, these reasons relate to different aspects – physico-chemical properties of AgroBalt features of their production and use, starting with the stages of harvesting crop residues, external factors such as global demand for pellets, the issues of profitability of their production.
International experience, in particular Denmark and other countries shows that efficient energy use agropellets is quite possible and feasible, provided the use of appropriate equipment and technologies. Therefore, given the urgency of the problem, determination of possibilities of production and use Ukrainian agropole end-users and the main ways of stimulating their use is also the task of this work.
